Adaanist Grammar Rule #11 | Compound Objects with Pronouns

Rule #11: When you have two or more objects joined by “and”, all of them must be in the object form (me, him, her, us, them), not the subject form (I, he, she, we, they).

Rule #11: When you have two or more objects joined by “and”, all of them must be in the object form (me, him, her, us, them), not the subject form (I, he, she, we, they).

The committee thanked Ankur and he for their contributions.

The committee thanked Ankur and him for their contributions.

In Adaanist Grammar Rule #10, we learned about Compound Subjects and the 2 different forms of pronoun - Subjective and Objective form.

Recap:

If pronoun is in the subject → Use subjective case (I, he, she, we, they).

If pronoun is in the object → Use objective case (me, him, her, us, them).

For instance, “Ankur” and “I” are both objects of the verb “thanked.”

This grammar rule is specifically about the objective form of pronouns.

What is Compound Object?

When two or more words share the same object position in a sentence (after the verb or preposition), they all must be objects → this is called a compound object.

A compound object consists of two or more objects that are connected by the word "and."

Subjects do the action → Use I, he, she, we, they. (Subjective Form)

Objects receive the action → Use me, him, her, us, them. (Objective Form)

How to find the object?

You can find the object by asking whom or what after the main verb.

In the example above, you would ask, “thanked whom?”

The answer is “Ankur and him.”

For nouns, the subject and object forms are the same, but for pronouns, you must use the object form if the pronoun is in the object.

🧨 Trap #11: “And” Confusion

Students often think that adding “and” means the pronoun should act like a subject.

The IBA DU exam takes advantage of this confusion, and sets a trap for you. Don’t fall for it.

The teacher praised Alex and I.

The teacher praised Alex and me.

Remember: Objects stay objects, even in a group.

🧰 Toolbox

Cross out extra words and check the pronoun alone.

Did you notice we are using the same tool that we learned in Adaanist Grammar Rule #1 and Rule #10?

Example:

The committee thanked Ankur and he for their contributions.

The committee thanked Ankur and he for their contributions.

thanked he (Does this sound right? Nope.)

Correct: thanked him.

(The committee thanked Ankur and him for their contributions.)
