How I Landed a Full Ride at the University of Southern Mississippi (and How You Can Too)

If you’ve got solid grades and submit what they ask for, you’re almost guaranteed admission.

By someone who didn’t pay a cent in tuition - for real.

Hello Adaanists,

So you’re looking at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and thinking:

“Okay, decent public university, warm weather, chill vibes, surprisingly good programs (especially in business, nursing, and the arts)… but what about the cost?”

Fair question. But here’s the wild part: USM has a 99% acceptance rate.

If you’ve got solid grades and submit what they ask for, you’re almost guaranteed admission.

It’s based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a laid-back college town with low living costs and a real sense of community - plus it’s just 90 minutes from New Orleans.

Total Cost (2024–25)

  • Mississippi residents: $27,316/year

  • Out-of-state & international: $29,316/year

USM throws serious merit money: 100% GPA-based, no leadership, no talent, no extras.

That’s it. If your grades are strong (and scores, optionally), they’ll stack your aid fast, which is why a lot of international students love this place.

I walked away with $27,200/year in aid, without being a genius or an athlete.

Let me show you how I did it, and how you can, too.

What Southern Miss is Really Looking for?

Let’s be real. USM isn’t trying to be selective. With a 99 percent acceptance rate, they’re not out here gatekeeping or making things complicated.

They want good, steady students. People who’ve done reasonably well in school, show some consistency, and can contribute to the campus community in a positive, easygoing way.

They’re not focused on essays. They’re not stressing about your extracurriculars. They’re not reading your letters of recommendation like it’s Ivy League. Honestly, they barely even look at that stuff.

If you have:

  • A solid GPA, especially anything above 3.25

  • Decent coursework based on what your school offers

  • A clean, straightforward application

Then you’re in. And you’re in the running for real money.

USM Common Data Set 2024-25

According to USM’s Common Data Set 2024–25, the only things they actually mark as very important are your GPA and test scores (if submitted).

Essays, recommendations, extracurriculars, class rank - all marked as not considered.

Things like interviews, talent, work experience, character, and even volunteer work don’t factor in at all.

So if you’ve been stressing about how to “stand out,” don’t.

Just focus on your grades, that’s all they’re really looking at.

Apply, upload your transcript, and let the merit aid roll in.

📚 Academic Strength

Your GPA is the main character here. At USM, grades are everything when it comes to admissions and scholarships.

The average GPA of enrolled students is 3.46, which means you don’t have to be perfect, just solid.

Most students fall somewhere between 3.25 and 3.99, and even if you’re a bit lower than that, you’re still in the running.

Here’s how the numbers break down, based on the Common Data Set:

So if you’re in the 3.5+ zone, you’re in great shape.

And even if you’re slightly below, you’ve still got a real shot, especially if you apply early and check all the boxes.

🧪 Test Scores (Optional but Can Help)

Animated GIF

USM is test-optional, so you don’t need an ACT or SAT to get in or to be considered for scholarships.

But if your scores are solid, submitting them can definitely give your application a little boost.

Here’s what USM reports for ACT scores:

  • ACT Composite: 25th percentile is 20, 75th percentile is 29

  • Most students score between 24 and 29, with 21–25 in Math and 23–30 in Reading

SAT scores weren’t listed in the CDS, but multiple sources say:

  • 25th percentile SAT is around 990

  • 75th percentile SAT is about 1190

  • Average SAT is roughly 1070

🇧🇩 If you’re applying from Bangladesh, you probably already know that GPA 5.0 in both SSC and HSC is the expected baseline for strong applicants.

USM sees that as a sign of consistency. But if you didn’t quite hit the full 5.0, don’t stress - a good SAT score (around 1200 or higher) can definitely make up for it.

Since USM doesn’t care about extracurriculars or essays, your GPA and test scores are doing all the work. So if your grades aren’t perfect, just balance it out with a strong SAT and you’re still fully in the game.

If your SAT is above 1150 or ACT is 26 or higher, go ahead and include it. It won’t hurt, and it might give you access to a few extra perks like Honors College consideration.

If your scores are lower or nonexistent, no worries. Your GPA still does all the heavy lifting.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Leadership & Involvement

Voting Election 2020 GIF by INTO ACTION

Let’s keep it real. You don’t need a packed résumé to impress USM. They’re not sitting around analyzing how many clubs you joined or how many hours you volunteered.

Leadership, talent, extracurriculars - none of that is required.

In fact, according to the CDS, USM doesn’t even consider things like volunteer work, personal qualities, or whether you held a student council position.

So if you’ve been worried about not being “involved enough,” you can relax.

At Southern Miss, your grades carry your whole app.

✍️ Essays: No Stress Required

Test Studying GIF by Pudgy Penguins

Same deal with essays - they’re not required, and they’re not heavily weighted in the process either.

USM isn’t trying to dig into your personal story or analyze your writing style.

Unless you’re applying for something specific like Honors College, you won’t even need to submit one.

If there’s an optional space to write something, you can keep it short and honest, but don’t overthink it. An essay isn’t going to make or break your chances here.

🗓️ When to Apply (and Why Timing Matters)

Out Of Time GIF by Pudgy Penguins

To get the maximum scholarship money from Southern Miss, when you apply matters just as much as how you apply.

Here’s everything you need to know to stay ahead of the deadlines.

Scholarship Eligibility & Deadline

Freshman scholarships are only available to students who are:

  • High school seniors

  • Fully admitted for the fall semester right after graduation

If you’re reapplying or are classified as a readmit student, you’re not eligible for freshman scholarships.

Important: Scholarship applications begin closing as early as February 1, 2025, so don’t wait.

To be considered for all scholarships, make sure your full admission file is submitted well before February.

That means:

  • Your application form

  • $45 application fee

  • Official high school transcript

  • ACT or SAT scores (if submitting)

  • A current FAFSA on file (required for most scholarships)

If you miss any of these, you may lose out on aid, even if you’re eligible.

💡 Underrated Tips That Can Give You an Edge

Health Care GIF by INTO ACTION

👉 Apply early - it’s super easy, no extras needed.

USM doesn’t ask for essays, extracurriculars, or letters of rec. Just send your test scores and transcript.

If you apply early, you’re automatically considered for scholarships.

It’s one of the lowest-effort apps with real payoff.

👉 Apply to the Honors College for perks and $$$.

Honors students get early class registration, research opportunities, and study abroad scholarships.

You’ll get up to $2,000 over 2 years just for joining.

Plus, priority scheduling = less stress every semester.

Definitely worth applying if you're eligible.

👉 Live off campus to save big after your first year.

If you don’t get a housing scholarship or it ends, off-campus apartments are way cheaper. Rent split with friends can save you hundreds every month.

A lot of students live better for less this way. Just start looking early, the good spots go fast.

Hope this guide clears things up and gives you a real shot at making USM affordable, or even tuition-free like it was for me.

If you’ve got the grades and follow the steps, this can be one of the smartest moves you make.

Godspeed on your journey, you’ve got this!
