How to Get into Knox College

I Scored a Full Tuition ++ Deal from Knox College (and How You Can Too)

Hello Adaanists,

So you’re looking at Knox College and thinking:

“Okay, small liberal arts school, fire creative writing rep, social justice vibes, dope campus, pretty easy to get into… but what about the money?”

Valid question. Knox is lowkey amazing, and the location’s a win. It’s in Galesburg, IL, just a 2-hour train ride from Chicago, so you get city access without the city stress (or city prices).

Also? Getting in isn’t hard. If you’ve got decent grades, some personality, and you show effort in your app, you’ve got a real shot.

Now about the money: the sticker price is $71,000/year. Yikes, I know.

But here’s the tea: you can get that number way down - I did. Knox can hit you with up to $45,000 a year in merit scholarships, and that’s before need-based aid, fine arts awards, or campus job income.

👉 I ended up bagging $62,000 a year.

Yep, it’s possible. You just need to know how the aid works, and how to play your cards right.

Keep reading, I’ll show you exactly how to get the most money out of Knox. 😉

👉 Don’t stress if you get an initial rejection due to your financial affidavit.

I applied with a $15K bank statement and got rejected. Knox usually wants to see that you can pay around $35K per year - they just need documentation to reflect that.

Later, I submitted an updated statement showing more funds, and it worked. You can also use a relative’s bank statement (with their consent) to meet the requirement. This is a smart workaround many international students use.

👉 Fine Arts Scholarships are a great bonus - if you’re into writing, theatre, dance, music, or visual art, Knox offers $4,000 to $8,000/year.

For that, you’ll need to put together a solid portfolio and talk a bit about your experience and achievements. Think about what parts of your art journey they’d actually be impressed by - and make those shine.

Best move? Reach out to Jaime Lam, the Fine Arts Admissions Counselor. She does portfolio reviews and interviews, and that can really help you land the higher awards.

And don’t overthink it - my friend sang (not even well, fr) and still bagged $4K a year. So yeah, go for it.

👉 Scholarship decisions might come a bit later - but they can bring your cost way down.

Once those come in, things change fast.

Also: Knox offers $15/hour for any on-campus job, no matter what kind of work. If you’re consistent and work during breaks, students say you can earn up to $13,000/year.

👉 You’ll get the Land of Lincoln Award - just make sure it shows.

All incoming students receive a $5,000 award automatically.

But still, double-check your aid package. If it’s missing, email admissions and they’ll add it.

After stacking the $45,000 Trustee Scholarship, $5,000 Land of Lincoln Award, up to $8,000 in Fine Arts aid, and a $4,000 campus employment grant, you could hit a total of $62,000 a year from Knox.

That’s honestly huge - and absolutely possible if you play it right.

🔭 What is Knox Really Looking For?

Knox is just trying to build a community of curious, open-minded, down-to-earth people, students who actually care, even if they don’t have it all figured out yet.

If you’re the type who enjoys learning, thinks deeply sometimes, maybe volunteers here and there, or just tries to do your best in school and life, that’s the kind of energy they’re into.

To land a strong merit scholarship (Knox offers up to $45,000 per year in merit scholarship, which takes a big chunk off that $70K sticker price), here’s what helps:

  • Solid academics (doesn’t have to be perfect)

  • Some activities or involvement that show effort

  • A personal, honest story in your essay

  • A chill, respectful vibe that fits Knox - thoughtful, creative, and open to new ideas

Knox isn’t out to reject people for fun. They just want students who’ll thrive in their community. If you’re real with them, they’ll meet you where you are.

💪 Academic Strength

You don’t have to be flawless, but Knox definitely wants to see that you’ve put in the work in high school.

Most students who land strong merit aid are rocking a GPA of 3.6 or higher, especially if they’ve taken challenging classes like AP, IB, honors, or dual enrollment.

That said, even if you're in the 3.4–3.5 range, you're still in the running - especially if your test scores hit hard.

GPA Breakdown for Enrolled Students (Knox College)

According to the CDS 2023-2025:

  • 6.0% had a 4.0

  • 29.0% were between 3.75-3.99

  • 31.0% were between 3.50-3.74

  • 20.0% were between 3.25-3.49

  • 10.0% were between 3.00-3.24

Average GPA of enrolled students: 3.62

Percent who submitted GPA: 76%

So yeah, if you’re above a 3.6, you're in a great spot for merit aid. Even around 3.5, you’ve still got a solid shot.

Now, if you’re applying from Bangladesh, here’s the real talk: having GPA 5.0 in both SSC and HSC is kind of the baseline for strong applicants.

But the good news? That GPA alone will be enough to land you Knox’s Presidential Scholarship - $43,000 per year - which is their second top merit scholarship.

Even without SAT scores, a perfect GPA can carry serious weight here - especially when paired with a thoughtful application.

If you do have a high SAT (like 1380+), even better.

And if you just missed GPA 5 by a bit? Don’t panic - a strong SAT score can definitely help smooth that out.

✍️ Test Scores

Knox is test-optional, but let’s be real - a strong SAT or ACT score can still give your app a glow-up, especially when it comes to snagging merit aid.

If your GPA’s solid and your essay hits, you don’t need scores. But if you’ve got them? They can absolutely boost your shot.

SAT 25th–75th Percentile (Knox College):

  • Composite: 1195 - 1380

  • Reading & Writing: 530 - 680

  • Math: 590 - 705

ACT 25th–75th Percentile:

  • Composite: 21 - 30

  • English: 20 - 31

  • Math: 20 - 27

  • Reading: 22 - 32

  • Science: 21 - 28

If you’ve scored 1380+ on the SAT or 30+ on the ACT, you’re in excellent shape for top merit consideration, especially if you also bring leadership, thoughtful writing, or community involvement.

But don’t stress if your scores aren’t there. Knox is test-optional for a reason.

Your GPA, your story, and your energy matter more. If the rest of your app shows effort and growth, you’re still fully in the game.

🏆 Leadership & Extracurriculars

Let’s be real - Knox isn’t hyper-focused on your extracurriculars. They’re not digging through your activities list with a microscope. If you’ve done cool stuff, great - mention it.

But if you haven’t cured climate change or started a nonprofit, you’re still good.

They’re just looking to see that you’ve been engaged in some way: volunteering, helping your family, working a part-time job, or being active in a club.

Nothing flashy. Just show up and show growth.

👑 Essays: Your Story Matters

Knox asks for an essay, but they don’t weigh it very heavily like other selective schools in the admissions process.

You should write something thoughtful and clear, but don’t stress it too much.

They’re mostly trying to make sure you’re a real person, so give them something honest, simple, and true to your voice. It doesn’t have to be deep or poetic.

Just be yourself and don’t overthink it.

🎓 The Trustee & Presidential Scholarships at Knox

At Knox, your merit scholarship is all about your academics.

There’s no extra application, no interviews, no hoops. Just apply, and they’ll automatically consider you for a scholarship based on your GPA (and test scores, if you submit them).

The Trustee Scholarship is Knox’s biggest one - worth $45,000 per year, which adds up to $180,000 over four years.

It usually goes to students with a 4.0 GPA, especially if you’ve also got strong test scores.

Right behind that is the Presidential Scholarship, which is $43,000 per year, and to be honest, if you’ve got a 4.0 GPA, it’s basically guaranteed, even without SAT or ACT.

Most students fall somewhere between $35K and $45K, depending on how strong your grades are.

A 2.5 GPA will usually land you around $35K.

The higher your GPA, the higher your scholarship - simple as that.

Knox gives you a few options: Early Action I (Nov 1), Early Action II (Dec 1), Regular Decision (Jan 15), and even rolling admissions after that if space is available.

But here’s the deal: it honestly doesn’t matter that much. Knox isn’t super selective, and the admissions team doesn’t play games with different pools.

Your app will be reviewed the same way no matter when you apply.

I applied Regular Decision and still got the full $45K Trustee offer, so don’t stress if you miss the early deadlines.

Just apply when you're ready. The earlier you apply, the earlier you hear back - that’s the only difference.
