Story
One day Molla Nasreddin Hoija was up on the roof of his two-story house, mending a hole. Suddenly he heard someone calling from below. He looked down and saw a man standing at the foot of the stairs, calling for him to come down.
Curious about what the man wanted, Hoija climbed all the way down from the roof and walked down the stairs to meet him.
The man turned out to be a beggar who simply wanted some money.
Hoija was furious. The beggar had made him stop his work and climb all the way down just to ask for money. He decided to teach the man a lesson.
He told the beggar to follow him and led him all the way back up the stairs to the rooftop where he had been working.
Once on the rooftop, Hoija turned to the beggar and said calmly: "Sorry, I have no money. You may leave."
The beggar was completely baffled and asked why Hoija had dragged him all the way up the stairs just to tell him that.
Hoija replied immediately: "Why did you make me climb all the way down just to ask for money? Couldn't you see I was working?"

একদা মোল্লা নাসিরুদ্দিন হোজ্জা তাঁর দোতলা বাড়ির ছাদে উঠে একটি ফুটো মেরামত করছিলেন। হঠাৎ তিনি নিচ থেকে কারোর ডাক শুনতে পেলেন। তিনি নিচের দিকে তাকিয়ে দেখলেন এক ব্যক্তি সিঁড়ির নিচে দাঁড়িয়ে তাঁকে নিচে নামার জন্য ডাকছে।
লোকটি কী চায় তা জানার কৌতূহল নিয়ে হোজ্জা ছাদ থেকে কষ্ট করে নিচে নেমে এলেন এবং সিঁড়ি বেয়ে তাঁর সাথে দেখা করতে গেলেন।
দেখা গেল যে, লোকটি একজন ভিক্ষুক এবং সে কেবল কিছু টাকা চেয়েছিল।
হোজ্জা খুব রেগে গেলেন। ভিক্ষুকটি তাঁর কাজ বন্ধ করিয়ে কেবল টাকার জন্য তাঁকে এতখানি পথ নিচে নামিয়ে এনেছিল। তিনি লোকটিকে একটি শিক্ষা দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন।
তিনি ভিক্ষুকটিকে তাঁর পিছু পিছু আসতে বললেন এবং তাকে নিয়ে আবার সিঁড়ি বেয়ে সেই ছাদে উঠে গেলেন যেখানে তিনি কাজ করছিলেন।
ছাদের ওপর পৌঁছানোর পর, হোজ্জা শান্তভাবে ভিক্ষুকটির দিকে ফিরে বললেন, "দুঃখিত, আমার কাছে কোনো টাকা নেই। তুমি এখন যেতে পারো।"
ভিক্ষুকটি পুরোপুরি অবাক হয়ে গেল এবং জিজ্ঞাসা করল কেন হোজ্জা তাকে শুধু এই কথাটি বলার জন্য এতগুলো সিঁড়ি বেয়ে উপরে টেনে আনলেন।
হোজ্জা তৎক্ষণাৎ উত্তর দিলেন, "তুমিও কেন আমাকে শুধু টাকা চাওয়ার জন্য অত নিচে নামিয়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলে? তুমি কি দেখতে পাওনি যে আমি কাজ করছিলাম?"
