Story
Long ago there was a mighty old king of England named Lear who had three daughters Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. He was tired of ruling and needed rest and made up his mind to step down the throne and divide his kingdom. But first he wanted to know how much they loved him and so he asked his eldest daughter, "How much do you love me?" Goneril declared, "Sir, I love you more than I can say." Lear was satisfied and called for the map of his kingdom and drew his finger round one-third of it. Then it was the turn of his second daughter Regan, who said, "My love for you shall never change." Lear was pleased and gave her a third of his kingdom. Then it was the turn of Cordelia, the youngest and most loved daughter. When asked, Cordelia said, "Nothing." Lear was shocked and said, "Nothing will come of nothing."
Furious and blinded by pride, Lear disowned Cordelia, who then left to marry the King of France. As soon as the older sisters gained power, they showed their true, cruel nature, stripping their father of his servants and throwing him out into a terrible storm. Heartbroken and driven mad by their betrayal, Lear was rescued by Cordelia, who returned with a French army to save him. She forgave her father completely. However, their army was defeated in battle, and both were imprisoned. Cordelia was tragically executed in prison, and King Lear died of a broken heart while holding her lifeless body.

অনেক দিন আগে ইংল্যান্ডে লিয়ার নামে এক পরাক্রমশালী বৃদ্ধ রাজা ছিলেন, যাঁর গনেরিল, রেগান এবং কর্ডেলিয়া নামে তিন মেয়ে ছিল। তিনি শাসনকাজ পরিচালনায় ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলেন এবং তাঁর বিশ্রামের প্রয়োজন ছিল। তাই তিনি সিংহাসন ত্যাগ করার এবং তাঁর রাজ্য ভাগ করে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন। কিন্তু প্রথমে তিনি জানতে চাইলেন তাঁর কন্যারা তাঁকে কতটা ভালোবাসে। তাই তিনি তাঁর বড় মেয়েকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "তুমি আমাকে কতখানি ভালোবাসো?" গনেরিল ঘোষণা করল, "মহাশয়, আমি আপনাকে এতটাই ভালোবাসি যা ভাষায় প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব নয়।" লিয়ার সন্তুষ্ট হলেন এবং তাঁর রাজ্যের মানচিত্রটি আনিয়ে তার এক-তৃতীয়াংশের চারপাশে আঙুল দিয়ে দাগ টেনে দিলেন। এরপর তাঁর মেজো মেয়ে রেগানের পালা এলো, সে বলল, "আপনার প্রতি আমার ভালোবাসা কখনোই বদলাবে না।" লিয়ার খুশি হলেন এবং তাকেও তাঁর রাজ্যের এক-তৃতীয়াংশ দিয়ে দিলেন। এরপর এলো তাঁর সবচেয়ে ছোট এবং প্রিয় কন্যা কর্ডেলিয়ার পালা। যখন তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করা হলো, কর্ডেলিয়া বলল, "কিছুই না।" লিয়ার স্তম্ভিত হলেন এবং বললেন, "শূন্য থেকে কিছুই পাওয়া যায় না।"
ক্রোধে এবং অহংকারে অন্ধ হয়ে লিয়ার কর্ডেলিয়াকে ত্যাজ্য করলেন, যার পর সে ফ্রান্সের রাজাকে বিয়ে করতে চলে গেল। বড় দুই বোন ক্ষমতা পাওয়ার সাথে সাথেই তাদের আসল, নিষ্ঠুর রূপ দেখাতে শুরু করল; তারা তাদের বাবার সব সুযোগ-সুবিধা কেড়ে নিল এবং তাঁকে এক ভয়ানক ঝড়ের মধ্যে বাড়ি থেকে বের করে দিল। তাদের এই বিশ্বাসঘাতকতায় হৃদয় ভেঙে লিয়ার উন্মাদ হয়ে যান। পরবর্তীতে কর্ডেলিয়া একটি ফরাসি সেনাবাহিনী নিয়ে তাঁর বাবাকে উদ্ধার করতে ফিরে আসে। সে তার বাবাকে সম্পূর্ণ ক্ষমা করে দিয়েছিল। তবে যুদ্ধে তাদের সেনাবাহিনী পরাজিত হয় এবং তারা দুজনেই বন্দি হয়। কারাগারে কর্ডেলিয়াকে নির্মমভাবে ফাঁসি দেওয়া হয় এবং রাজা লিয়ার তাঁর প্রিয় কন্যার নিথর দেহ কোলে নিয়ে ভাঙা হৃদয়ে প্রাণ ত্যাগ করেন।
