Story
Rip Van Winkle was born in a village in America. He was simple and good-natured, and he would never refuse to assist a neighbor. He did not like to work on his own farm and caught fish all day without a murmur. His wife scolded him always for his idleness, but in vain. The children would shout with joy when they saw him, and he told them stories of ghosts and witches. One day, he went away into the woods with his gun and his dog, Wolf. He got upon the highest part of the mountain. The sun was about to set, and he thought of going home. Soon, he heard a voice from a distance calling his name.
He looked around and saw a strange old man dressed in ancient clothing, carrying a heavy barrel. Rip helped the man carry it to a hidden valley, where a group of silent, odd-looking men were playing bowling. Rip drank a mysterious liquor from their barrel, fell into a deep sleep, and woke up twenty years later.
When he returned to his village, everything had changed. He had completely slept through the American Revolutionary War. He went to sleep as a loyal subject of King George III of Britain, but woke up as a free citizen of the newly formed United States of America. His wife had passed away, his children were fully grown, and a portrait of General George Washington now hung where the King's picture used to be. Luckily, an old neighbor recognized him, and Rip lived out the rest of his days happily, sharing his incredible story with everyone.
