Story
Once a gold necklace went missing from a rich man's house. It was naturally suspected that one of the servants had stolen it.
All the servants were called and interrogated, but nobody confessed. So the owner of the house lodged a complaint in court.
The servants were summoned to court, where they again denied stealing the necklace. The judge listened and then chalked out an intelligent plan.
He gave each servant a stick of equal length and announced: "One of these sticks will grow by an inch overnight, and that will be the stick belonging to the thief." The servants were sent home with their sticks.
That night, the guilty servant was terrified. Believing the judge's words, he secretly cut one inch off his own stick so it would not be longer than the others the next day.
When all the servants returned to court, the judge measured the sticks. One stick was shorter than all the rest. The judge immediately identified the owner of that stick, and the thief was caught.

একসময় এক ধনী ব্যক্তির বাড়ি থেকে একটি সোনার হার হারিয়ে গেল। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সন্দেহ হলো যে বাড়ির কোনো একজন চাকর সেটি চুরি করেছে।
সব চাকরকে ডেকে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করা হলো, কিন্তু কেউ স্বীকার করল না। তাই বাড়ির মালিক আদালতে অভিযোগ দায়ের করলেন।
চাকরদের আদালতে তলব করা হলো, কিন্তু তারা সেখানেও চুরির কথা অস্বীকার করল। বিচারক সব শুনলেন এবং তারপর একটি বুদ্ধিমান পরিকল্পনা তৈরি করলেন।
তিনি প্রত্যেক চাকরকে সমান দৈর্ঘ্যের একটি করে লাঠি দিলেন এবং ঘোষণা করলেন, "এই লাঠিগুলোর মধ্যে একটি রাতের মধ্যে এক ইঞ্চি বেড়ে যাবে, এবং সেটিই হবে চোরের লাঠি।" এরপর চাকরদের লাঠি নিয়ে বাড়ি পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া হলো।
সেই রাতে অপরাধী চাকর ভয়ে কাঁপতে লাগল। বিচারকের কথা বিশ্বাস করে সে গোপনে তার লাঠি থেকে এক ইঞ্চি কেটে ছোট করে ফেলল, যাতে পরদিন সেটি অন্যগুলোর চেয়ে বড় না হয়।
পরদিন সব চাকর আদালতে ফিরে এলে বিচারক লাঠিগুলো মাপলেন। একটি লাঠি বাকি সবগুলোর চেয়ে ছোট। বিচারক সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সেই লাঠির মালিককে চিহ্নিত করলেন এবং চোর ধরা পড়ল।
