In every airport, there are so many stores. My dad works at one of these stores at New York's JFK Airport as a salesperson for the last 2 years. He barely makes enough to pay the rent to live in a basement and put food on the table for my mom and younger brother. I don't exactly come from a financially privileged background.

After August 5, 2024, I had to hide in Bangladesh for 3 months. Then, I came to the US on November 4, 2024. I studied for 3 years at IBA DU as a BBA student but couldn’t complete my degree in the final year due to ongoing threats to my life from various entities in Bangladesh.

After I came here, I had to immediately start working. My dad is 55 years old, and my mom is 52. I have seen my dad standing for hours at the store in the airport to earn just the minimum wage in the US. So I had to take the financial responsibility for my family.

Every month, I financially contribute to my family so that our small 4-member family can survive. Due to my work, I don't get to live with my parents anymore.

I am not a US citizen. I have held a US Green Card since 2023. That’s why I was able to come to the US.

I don’t exactly like taking pictures of myself. But I love this picture. This is the picture I took with my mom the day I got admitted to IBA DU, in front of our IBA building.

So, from the best school and the best business school to one of the best universities in the world - we covered all of it. People only believe in great endings; we believe in the entire journey.

Columbia is a test-optional university. Since I didn’t have the circumstances to sit for the SAT, I didn’t have to take it. However, I studied in Bangla medium schools (Government Laboratory High School and Dhaka College). That’s why I had to take the IELTS.

Columbia is a very expensive school. But Columbia generously offered me financial aid that would cover my entire tuition fee. I still have to cover my living expenses.

I will gradually share what I have been doing in the US since November 2024 just to survive.

I have been fortunate enough that an American - whom I didn’t personally know before (and who has nothing to do with Bangladesh) - was gracious enough to make a bet on me and helped me survive. While my friends abandoned me and jumped into canceling me by forming mobs on social media, this American, his family, and friends empowered me.

Even though America welcomed me with open arms, I don’t intend to take US citizenship.

I will tell my story of what I’m doing and building in the US some other time. Till then, please keep me in your prayers. I won’t let you down.

প্রতিটা বিমানবন্দরে অনেকগুলো দোকান থাকে। নিউ ইয়র্কের JFK বিমানবন্দরের এমনই একটি দোকানে আমার বাবা একজন সেলসপারসন হিসেবে কাজ করেন। তিনি কেবলমাত্র একটি বেজমেন্টের ভাড়া দিতে ও আমার মা এবং ছোট ভাইয়ের খাবারের খরচ চালাতে পারছেন। আমি আর্থিকভাবে সুবিধাজনক কোনো পরিবেশ থেকে আসিনি।

২০২৪ সালের ৫ আগস্টের পর, আমি বাংলাদেশে তিন মাস লুকিয়ে থাকতে বাধ্য হই। এরপর, ২০২৪ সালের ৪ নভেম্বর আমি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আসি। আমি IBA DU-তে BBA শিক্ষার্থী হিসেবে তিন বছর পড়েছি, কিন্তু শেষ বছরে আমার ডিগ্রি শেষ করতে পারিনি - কারণ বাংলাদেশে বিভিন্ন গোষ্ঠী আমার জীবনের উপর হুমকি দিয়েছিল।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আসার পরপরই আমাকে কাজ শুরু করতে হয়। আমার বাবা এখন ৫৫ বছর বয়সী, আর মা ৫২। আমি আমার বাবাকে ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা বিমানবন্দরের দোকানে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে দেখেছি - শুধুমাত্র মিনিমাম ওয়েজ উপার্জনের জন্য। এজন্য, আমি আমার পরিবারের দায়িত্ব কাঁধে তুলে নিই। প্রতি মাসে আমি আমার পরিবারের জন্য আর্থিকভাবে সহযোগিতা করি যাতে আমাদের চার সদস্যের ছোট পরিবারটা কোনোভাবে বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। কাজের কারণে আমি আর আমার বাবা-মায়ের সঙ্গে একসাথে থাকতে পারি না।

আমি আমেরিকার নাগরিক নই। আমি ২০২৩ সাল থেকে গ্রীন কার্ডধারী। সেই কারণেই আমি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আসতে পেরেছি।

আমি সাধারণত নিজের ছবি তুলতে পছন্দ করি না। কিন্তু এই ছবিটা আমি অনেক ভালোবাসি। এইটা সেই ছবি - যেদিন আমি IBA DU-তে ভর্তি হই, সেদিন আমার মায়ের সঙ্গে IBA বিল্ডিংয়ের সামনে তোলা।

শ্রেষ্ঠ স্কুল থেকে শ্রেষ্ঠ বিজনেস স্কুল - এরপর পৃথিবীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যন্ত - আমরা পুরোটা পথ পেরিয়েছি। মানুষ কেবল সফল পরিণতিতে বিশ্বাস করে, আমরা পুরো যাত্রাটাতেই বিশ্বাস করি।

কলাম্বিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় একটি টেস্ট-অপশনাল প্রতিষ্ঠান। আমার পরিস্থিতির কারণে আমি SAT দিতে পারিনি। আর কলাম্বিয়া টেস্ট-অপশনাল হওয়ার জন্য আমাকে সেটা দিতে হয়নি। তবে আমি বাংলা মাধ্যম স্কুলে পড়েছি (গভ. ল্যাবরেটরি হাই স্কুল এবং ঢাকা কলেজ), সেই কারণে আমাকে IELTS দিতে হয়েছে।

কলাম্বিয়া একটি অত্যন্ত ব্যয়বহুল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। কিন্তু কলাম্বিয়া উদারভাবে আমাকে এমন একটি ফাইন্যান্সিয়াল এইড প্রদান করেছে যা আমার সম্পূর্ণ টিউশন ফি কভার করবে। তবে, আমার থাকা-খাওয়ার খরচ এখনো আমাকে নিজেকেই বহন করতে হবে।

আমি ধীরে ধীরে শেয়ার করব - ২০২৪ সালের নভেম্বর থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত আমি কী করছি শুধুমাত্র বেঁচে থাকার জন্য।

আমি সৌভাগ্যবান যে, একজন আমেরিকান - যাকে আমি আগে চিনতাম না (যার বাংলাদেশের সাথে কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই) - তিনি আমার উপর বিশ্বাস রেখেছেন এবং আমাকে বাঁচতে সাহায্য করেছেন। যখন আমার বন্ধুরা সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায় মব তৈরি করে আমাকে “ক্যানসেল” করতে উঠে পড়ে লাগে, তখন এই আমেরিকান ব্যক্তি, তার পরিবার ও তার বন্ধুরা আমাকে সাহস দিয়েছেন।

যদিও আমেরিকা আমাকে উদারভাবে বরণ করেছে, আমি মার্কিন নাগরিকত্ব গ্রহণ করব না।

আমি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে কী করছি, কী তৈরি করছি - সেটা আরেকদিন বলব। ততদিন, আমার জন্য দোয়া করবেন। আমি আপনাদের নিরাশ করব না।
