The Internet technology has helped design a large number of web sites to facilitate social relations among people around the world. These are known as social networking services or social networks or social media.

ইন্টারনেট প্রযুক্তি বিশ্বজুড়ে মানুষের মধ্যে সামাজিক সম্পর্ক সহজ করার জন্য বিপুল সংখ্যক ওয়েবসাইট তৈরিতে সাহায্য করেছে। এগুলো সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্কিং সার্ভিস, সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্ক বা সোশ্যাল মিডিয়া নামে পরিচিত।

At present, Facebook is the most popular social media site. LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), Google+ etc. are other frequently used social services.

বর্তমানে ফেসবুক হলো সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় সোশ্যাল মিডিয়া সাইট। লিংকডইন, এক্স (পূর্বে টুইটার), গুগল প্লাস ইত্যাদি হলো অন্যান্য বহুল ব্যবহৃত সামাজিক সেবা।

Social network services are web-based and hence, provide ways for the users to interact through the Internet. These services make it possible to connect people across the borders and thus have made the users feel that they really live in a global village.

সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্ক সেবাগুলো ওয়েবভিত্তিক, তাই এগুলো ব্যবহারকারীদের ইন্টারনেটের মাধ্যমে পারস্পরিক যোগাযোগের সুযোগ করে দেয়। এই সেবাগুলো সীমান্তের ওপারের মানুষদের সংযুক্ত করা সম্ভব করেছে, ফলে ব্যবহারকারীরা অনুভব করে যে তারা সত্যিই একটি বিশ্বগ্রামে (global village) বাস করছে।

Why are social networks expanding so fast? The answer is simple. Most of the social services are cost-free. You can make use of them free, paying a very little to your Internet service provider.

সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্কগুলো এত দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে কেন? উত্তরটা সহজ। বেশিরভাগ সামাজিক সেবাই বিনামূল্যে পাওয়া যায়। শুধু ইন্টারনেট সেবাদাতাকে সামান্য টাকা দিয়েই তুমি এগুলো বিনামূল্যে ব্যবহার করতে পারো।

Secondly, you can make your personal profile public before the entire online community. It is like presenting yourself before the entire world. You can also look into other people's profile if you are interested. It is simple and easy.

দ্বিতীয়ত, তুমি তোমার ব্যক্তিগত প্রোফাইল পুরো অনলাইন কমিউনিটির সামনে উন্মুক্ত করতে পারো। এটা যেন সারা বিশ্বের সামনে নিজেকে তুলে ধরার মতো। আগ্রহী হলে তুমি অন্যদের প্রোফাইলও দেখতে পারো। এটি সরল ও সহজ।

Thirdly, social networks allow users to upload pictures, multimedia contents and modify the profile. Some services like Facebook allow users to update their profiles.

তৃতীয়ত, সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্কগুলো ব্যবহারকারীদের ছবি ও মাল্টিমিডিয়া কনটেন্ট আপলোড করতে এবং প্রোফাইল পরিবর্তন করতে দেয়। ফেসবুকের মতো কিছু সেবা ব্যবহারকারীদের প্রোফাইল হালনাগাদ (update) করার সুযোগ দেয়।

Fourthly, networks allow users to post blog entries. User profiles have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users.

চতুর্থত, নেটওয়ার্কগুলো ব্যবহারকারীদের ব্লগ পোস্ট করার সুযোগ দেয়। ব্যবহারকারীর প্রোফাইলে বন্ধু ও অন্যান্য ব্যবহারকারীদের মন্তব্যের জন্য একটি নির্দিষ্ট অংশ থাকে।

Finally, there are privacy protection measures too. A user himself or herself decides over the number of visitors/viewers, and what information should be shared with others.

সবশেষে, গোপনীয়তা রক্ষার ব্যবস্থাও আছে। একজন ব্যবহারকারী নিজেই ঠিক করে কতজন দর্শক তার প্রোফাইল দেখবে এবং কোন তথ্য অন্যদের সাথে শেয়ার করা হবে।
