26 March, our Independence Day, is one of the most important state festivals. The day is celebrated every year in the country with great enthusiasm and fervour. It is a national holiday.

২৬ মার্চ, আমাদের স্বাধীনতা দিবস, দেশের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রাষ্ট্রীয় উৎসবগুলোর একটি। দিনটি প্রতি বছর সারা দেশে অত্যন্ত উৎসাহ ও উদ্দীপনার সঙ্গে উদযাপিত হয়। এটি একটি জাতীয় ছুটির দিন।

All offices, educational institutions, shops and factories remain closed on this day. The day begins with a 31 gun salute.

এই দিনে সব অফিস, শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান, দোকানপাট ও কলকারখানা বন্ধ থাকে। ৩১ বার তোপধ্বনির মধ্য দিয়ে দিনটির সূচনা হয়।

Early in the morning the President and the Prime Minister, on behalf of the nation, place floral wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar. Then other leaders, political parties, diplomats, social and cultural organisations, educational institutions and freedom fighters pay homage to the martyrs.

ভোরবেলায় রাষ্ট্রপতি ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাতির পক্ষ থেকে সাভারের জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। এরপর অন্যান্য নেতৃবৃন্দ, রাজনৈতিক দল, কূটনীতিক, সামাজিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন, শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান এবং মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা শহীদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন।

People from all walks of life also go there in rallies and processions. There are many cultural programmes throughout the day, highlighting the heroic struggle and sacrifice in 1971.

সর্বস্তরের মানুষও মিছিল ও শোভাযাত্রা করে সেখানে যায়। সারা দিন ধরে অনেক সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান চলে, যেখানে ১৯৭১ সালের বীরত্বপূর্ণ সংগ্রাম ও আত্মত্যাগ তুলে ধরা হয়।

In the National Stadium, school children, scouts and girl guides take part in various displays to entertain thousands of spectators. Educational institutions also organise their individual programmes.

জাতীয় স্টেডিয়ামে স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থী, স্কাউট ও গার্ল গাইডরা হাজার হাজার দর্শককে আনন্দ দিতে বিভিন্ন প্রদর্শনীতে (ডিসপ্লে) অংশ নেয়। শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোও নিজ নিজ অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে।

Sports meets and tournaments are also organised on the day, including the exciting boat race in the river Buriganga.

এই দিনে ক্রীড়া প্রতিযোগিতা ও টুর্নামেন্টেরও আয়োজন করা হয়, যার মধ্যে রয়েছে বুড়িগঙ্গা নদীতে রোমাঞ্চকর নৌকাবাইচ।

In the evening, all major public buildings are illuminated with colourful lights. Bangla Academy, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and other socio-cultural organisations hold cultural functions. Similar functions are also arranged in other places in the country.

সন্ধ্যায় সব প্রধান সরকারি ভবন রঙিন আলোয় আলোকসজ্জিত করা হয়। বাংলা একাডেমি, বাংলাদেশ শিল্পকলা একাডেমি ও অন্যান্য সামাজিক-সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। দেশের অন্যান্য স্থানেও একই ধরনের অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করা হয়।
